An Illinois Tragi-Comedy

One of the dull-headed birds in the State House in Springfield, Illinois thinks it would be nice to increase cigarette taxes by a dollar.

He seems ignorant of what happened in New York when that was tried, nor what the likely effects of a dollar increase will be in Illinois.

When New York raised the tax, the effects on smokers were immediate, and they not include quitting.

  • New York smokers went out of state for their cigarettes
  • A black market in cigarettes erupted overnight
  • White Eyes headed for the Indian Reservations to buy untaxed cigarettes by the case
  • Government receipts from the tobacco taxes plummeted
  • Lines of trucks were likely going down I-90, a/k/a Tobacco Road, to lay in a supply of cheap North Carolina cigarettes

COMMENT Aint politicians' obtuseness comical? Madison, here we come!
