SPRINGFIELD - At the same time they were fighting an income tax hike and calling on Democrats to cut the state budget, Republicans in the Illinois Senate handed out raises to top aides and other staffers worth an average of 4.9 percent.
Senate Republicans were not alone in doling out salary boosts, according to a Herald & Review Springfield Bureau survey of the four legislative caucuses that comprise the Illinois General Assembly.
Democrats in the Illinois Senate, who advocated for the income tax increase during the lame-duck legisla-tion session in January, also gave staffers salary increases worth an average of 4.5 percent.
